Masala Mantar

"Let the Magic Begin" announces the board as you enter the dusty side lane of the building.You go past wash basins, kitsch, posters and find yourself under dangling ping pong balls of light. An interesting ceiling, made of - hold your breath -egg trays, yellow-and-red wooden chairs (reminding you of your nursery school days) in this brand new Andheri restaurant. But the magic really begins when you put your teeth into the food. No wonder it is known as Masala Mantar! Robust, lusty flavours leap from the generous portions of the roundly spiced Punjabi fare. Be it the Laal Mutton, my favourite succulent Mint Nimbu Chicken, or even the Mooli Paratha. The kebabs are particularly good and roundly spiced (try the Bhatti ka Murgh, Burrah Kebab). Newly introduced Chicken Kebab, Adraki Aloo Gobhi, even Kathal Subzi and Nimbu Kadhi. However, the Coconut Fish Tikka is too creamy and the Butter Garlic Prawns don't add up to much. Stick to the Indian flavours; the bland, creamy Safed Haathi of chicken and capsicum is a tasty exception. Great choice for veggies. The creamy Phirni and the crisp Jalebi are delightful on your palate and the food here will be light on your wallet.
